Jr High Retreat

Okay so I am about two weeks late in writing this post but better late than never I guess. The first part of November we had the Miami Baptist Association Junior High Retreat at Kirkwood and we just had a blast. Mac Hillabush was our speaker for the weekend and he challenged us to change our world upside down for Christ. We were challenged about joining God's army and whether or not our youth groups look more like an army or a social club. The youth praise band from St. Clair Ave Baptist Church led us in worship the weekend and it was just tremendous. It was great to see about 60-65 middle schoolers and adults worshipping the Lord. If you have never seen it I encourage you to take advantage of such a great opportunity. Please feel free to add your favorite memory and remember to make time for silence so we can listen to what God is telling us.

Sr High Retreat

What a weekend we just had!! There were over 95 of us that met together for a time of worship, hearing the Word of God, playing games, and just getting to know each other. Adam Metzger was a powerful speaker and much thanks to St Clair Ave Baptist Church for providing some tremendous times before the throne of God in worship. I am sure we will not, or at least I pray not, forget what took place this past weekend and the ways we have experienced God. Please remember the commitments you made at the different stations from Saturday night and the video from Sunday morning. To watch the video again please go to www.hagnos.com or search for "Lifehouse Skit: Mission" on www.youtube.com and I am sure you will be able to find it. If not please let me know. If you want please add comments with your favorite memory from Sr High Retreat. Also keep asking yourself: What are you willing to surrender? Surrending it all for Jesus.

Sanctuary

I can honestly say that Camp Kirkwood happens to be my favorite place on this earth. My family has been going to Camp Kirkwood for over 30 years. Over all it hasn't changed much....It doesn't need to. You can't improve upon God's creation. Oh, there have been some needed man-made improvements as time passed. Such as new air conditioned cabins, lodge renovations, improved kitchen facilities, etc., and hopefully more to come,...but the same beautiful surroundings, the same beautiful sanctuary, the lake, the creek, the trails, the wildlife such as the deer, raccoons, squirrels, and birds, are still there for generations yet to come, to discover. It is still the same place year after year, for friends and families to bond even closer. To build memories and enjoy God's bountiful nature as they camp in the RV section and go exploring the woods.
We first discovered Camp Kirkwood through our late beloved church pastor recommending that we send our children there for camp one summer long ago. They went and loved it. They enjoyed the various activities, such as swimming, canoeing, fishing, hiking, volley ball, archery. They introduced many friends to the camp over the years and now they are sending their own children there as well. It is an ideal place for children along with their peer groups, to learn to know Christ on a more personal level. They have always looked forward to going every summer and have enjoyed many sing a longs and testimonies around the camp fire as do our grandchildren. Now, our grandchildren are introducing their friends to Christ through Camp Kirkwood. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

My Memories of Camp

Memories of Camp Kirkwood- By Karen Osler
Ah, take me back to 1976…….my brother, Brian, and older twin sisters- Beth and Beverly, Mom, Dad and of course Fritz Von Schnooper, our daschund. Let’s put them all in a tent that sleeps 6, close to a hillside. The evening fire smells great- just like gasoline……..let’s have gasoline flavored pizzas, made with bread, pizza sauce and cheese in the “pie irons”. Best food ever. Sh! I hear something………is it an animal? Flashlights shine everywhere. Oh, it’s the dog.
This place is great! It’s too bad that storm is brewing. It’s time to go to bed. Oh, started raining. We’ve never pitched a tent before and it is collapsing around us. Mom is yelling “Don’t touch the sides it’ll make a hole.” Beth mentions she’s getting wet. Brian says “Aren’t we on a hill?” Lightening is everywhere. Fritz is barking and chasing his tail in the excitement. Glad there’s room in the tent for that……. Dad, our brave warrior, gets a rope and ties our tent to a tree. BOOM! Crack of lightening! Gosh, I hope he comes back. In crawls a very wet, angry Dad says “Turn the lights out and go to sleep!” That is how our family camping experience began at Camp Kirkwood.
My siblings were old enough to go to the youth camp that summer. We see they are going to put in a lake between the lodge and the youth camp. There is a huge hill where the lake will go. Oops, Brian fell down it and skinned his knee. I get to visit the youth camp. They get to sleep in covered wagons and tents that look like something from F Troop. Someday I’ll be old enough to go there……….
Later we got a pop-up trailer. Betty Sunday and I are attending Jr. Camp. I feel so mature now. I’ve never connected with God like this in nature. I love the campfire. Re-dedicate my life? You bet I want to!
We now camp with the Woebers almost every weekend at Kirkwood. Now we weather the storms without fear. Once after a storm we went down to the creek and played in the “rapids”. I recall sitting on rocks as the water poured over us. The water carried me away and Beth rescued me by my hair. Thanks Beth! Hey, let’s go to the cliff and slide down it in the mud! 3 hours later all the kids, Dad, and Denny greet Mom, Verna, and Rev. McKnight (the camp manager) covered in mud. We still submit this is THE best Kirkwood memory.
We keep attending the camp, through our teen years. Our friends are now joining us, and dedicating their lives to Christ. Brian meets a man from Judson College and is now going to go to college there. I get to be a counselor this summer for the first “New Adventures” camp. The following year I get offered a staff position as kitchen staff. I meet Esther Goodall, the Camp manager’s wife, who was an RN. She encourages me to consider nursing as a career. Thanks Esther! The next year I am hired back on staff as camp “nurse”. The following year I enter nursing school. Kirkwood is continuing to help create who I am as a Christian, and now, as a young adult.
Fast forward to 2007- My parents practically live at Camp Kirkwood in their RV. My boys attend youth camp and weekend retreats. Our neighbors are introduced to Kirkwood. My cousins Roy and Pam have now joined my parents at camp on a regular basis. My parents still camp next to the Woebers. They have golf carts now to get around easier. Our family plans their vacations around the camp schedule. I walk around with Camp Kirkwood t-shirts and talk about it every chance I get. I am gently suggesting we get a trailer to my husband Jim, so we can introduce the boys’ friends to camp. Let more memories begin………….

Colerain High School Cheerleading Retreat

In August of 2005 30 cheerleaders and 3 coaches attended a retreat at Camp Kirkwood. The girls had a blast. Unfortunately it rained but they enjoyed putting on shows, playing games, practicing, and a great time bonding in the lodge. Everyone raved about the food too.

One of the senior cheerleaders, Tiffany Rickoff, was interviewed in the Colerain High School 2006 yearbook. She was asked what is your fondest memory of your senior year? She answered "my best memory was our retreat at Camp Kirkwood"!

Through the prayers and efforts of many, Kirkwood Camp & Conference Center was purchased at an auction by the newly formed Kirkwood Ministries, Inc. within the Miami Association. Kirkwood will continue to minister through summer weekly youth camps and weekend retreats as it has since 1963. It is our hope that Kirkwood will continue to thrive not only as a place to provide ministry to youth, and form life-long friendships, but also as a place that other church affiliations, clubs, and businesses can enjoy the facilities as well.
